Proper wearing of masks may insure health

News From:Institute of Occupational Safety and Health
Date:2006-11-09
The period from October to February is peak flu season. People have become exceedingly concerned with contagious diseases, including the possibility of bird flu in the past two years. The Institute of Occupational Health and Safety monitors occupational safety and laborer health, focusing on appropriate selection and use of personal protection masks.
The Institute invited 100 college students to stay in the same environment and observed the effects of mask protection with precision instruments, and found different masks have diverse protective ability. In particular, the N95 mask performs 8 times more effective than ordinary medical masks.
Simultaneously, different types of N95 masks deviate in face shape suitability and wearing methods; some are a cup-type mask while others only the rubber respirator. However, the rubber respirators are sure to perform 10 times more effective than ordinary portable masks, laborers in high risk environments are recommended to use proper functioning masks, which are also highly effective.
According to these findings, N95 masks may have better protection than ordinary medical use masks, but improper usage may limit protection or possibly accentuate effects. Therefore, the Institute cooperates with Centers for Disease Control to introduce overseas evaluation systems and promotion to medical institutes. According to a questionnaire, 93.2% of medical employees worry about mask leakage, 93% of them are more aware of the importance of mask usage, and 91.4% of them appear more confident to wear masks properly after evaluation, proving the necessity of evaluation system for correct usage.
The Institute coordinates with the disaster elimination strategy of the Council to conduct the Walking Around the Country Occupational Safety Promotion Program, in which participating audiences are shown the effects of wearing masks and how to correctly wear them. All interested in participating are welcome to go to the Kaohsiung Love River Music Field on Nov. 10th and Tainan ChangJung Christian University on Nov. 10th for an informative exhibition on how to correctly wear masks.
