The basic wages are to guarantee that the basic needs of workers can be provided for. According to Article 21 of the Labor Standards Act, wages are to be determined through negotiations between the worker and the employer, provided that such wages do not fall below the basic rate which is to be decided by the Basic Wage Deliberation Committee of the central competent authority (the Council of Labor Affairs) and presented to the Executive Yuan for approval. In the future, the Council of Labor Affairs will continue to review the basic wages to ensure that workers are able to sustain their purchasing power and provide for their basic needs.

Starting from Jan. 1, 2014, the basic hourly wage will be adjusted from NT$109 to NT$115 while the basic monthly wages will be adjusted from NT$19047 to NT$19273 beginning on Jul. 1, 2014. After the adjustments, if any wages agreed upon between the worker and the employer should fall below the said standards, such wages shall be readjusted according to law.
